Whether you live alone or with a big family, cleaning your home can feel stressful and overwhelming. It can also seem like it takes up your entire day. You start in the kitchen, and before you know it, three hours have passed—and you’ve only made it halfway through the house. Yikes.
The good news? There are ways to avoid this and make cleaning feel like less of a marathon endeavor. We asked the pros how they tackle cleaning more efficiently. Here are eight expert-approved tips to speed up your cleaning routine so it takes less time—and feels a lot less daunting.
1. Start by Creating a To-Do List
Rosa Picosa, CleanTok influencer and Fabuloso cleaning expert, suggests giving yourself a roadmap of sorts before you start scrubbing away. “An unorganized list of tasks floating around in my brain leads to so many distractions, so do yourself a favor and come up with a plan,” she says. “It doesn’t need to be complicated, it just needs to keep you focused.”
Whether you’re simply making a list of what you need to clean in order of priority, such as kitchen, bathroom, and living room, or creating a more detailed version with tasks for each space, having a plan can keep you on track. Plus, checking things off the list as you go is an extra-satisfying bonus.
2. Use a Timer to Stay on Track
Life can get busy, and most of us don’t have a whole day to clean our homes. So, if you need a little push to keep yourself going, Rochelle Wilkinson of Dirt Detective Cleaning in Lutherville, Maryland, recommends trying a timer. “Set a timer for 30 minutes and put on a music playlist,” she says.
Alternatively, you could listen to your favorite podcast or audiobook during that 30-minute period.
